Lenovo ThinkPad SL400

Optical  The predictable demise of Lenovo's small-business notebook line—the 3000 series—happened with little or no notice. The gap between the enterprise ThinkPads and the 3000 series was simply too wide for any small-business user to bridge. Yet that ending allowed a new line of Lenovo small-business laptops to emerge. The ThinkPad SL400 ($1,129 direct) looks as if it's from the same gene pool as its enterprise brothers, and it inherits many of the classic ThinkPad design features, such as the signature keyboard and TrackPoint pointing stick. No slouch, the SL400 blazes the performance trails with a variety of processing options.

Effective Optical Disc Repair?

Optical "I have an extensive music collection on original CD media. While most of it is in impeccable condition, I have a few discs that have suffered extensive scratching through listening to the disc either via a portable disc player, or in a car CD stacker. I've long since learned the error of my old ways and don't listen to discs in those devices any more, but those discs are irreplaceable in many cases. I would very much like to be able to repair them or have them repaired to original condition, or at least well enough that I can pull the tracks off once and archive the track data. I have heard really uncomplimentary things about devices like the Skip Doctor; ranging from it not helping to it making things worse. I've heard great things about JFJ devices that are seen on the counters of most Hollywood and BlockBuster video stores, but even their consumer devices start at $250. I would appreciate any other suggestions for devices that people have had personal experience with that won't break the bank."

QPC Lasers Announces Asia

SYLMAR, Calif., Aug 05, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- QPC Lasers, Inc. "QPC," a world leader in the design and manufacture of high brightness, high power semiconductor chip-based lasers for the consumer electronics, industrial, defense, and medical markets, today announced that the customer in recently announced $12 Million Laser TV Contract is Asia Optical (Taiwan Stock Exchange: 3019) "AOCI," Taiwan's leading optical consumer electronics manufacturer; AOCI has successfully demonstrated a sixty inch image based on RPTV Laser TV technology at QPC's headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. QPC initially announced the Laser TV development and production contract in November 2007, and completed the development just last month, marking an important milestone in the path to consumer available Laser TV. The contract with AOCI is an exclusive supply relationship which provides for an $11 Million supply agreement to be delivered over the next three years, and carries a potential value of up to $230 million over the 10 year term of the contract. Asia Optical Co. Inc. is Taiwan's leading original equipment manufacturer "OEM" and original designed manufacturer "ODM" of optical instruments, including fiber optics, digital cameras, DVD imaging, laser range finders and more. The company designs, manufactures and distributes its products all over the world; AOCI's products are sold under a number of well known household consumer electronic brand names. AOCI was founded in 1981, and today annual sales exceed $1 Billion USD. QPC's BrightLase(R) Red-Green-Blue "RGB" lasers offer advantages to consumer electronics manufacturers including expanded color gamut for an exceptionally bright visual experience, low power consumption, an ultra compact footprint, and are designed for low cost high volume manufacturing. QPC offers integrated visible laser technologies designed to be compatible with the leading micro-display technology including LCOS, scanning micro-mirrors, DLP and LCD. "We are honored to be working with Asia Optical and are very excited to announce this demonstration, which we feel stands as a disruptive technology to the market," said co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of QPC, Dr. Jeffrey Ungar. "QPC recently entered the market for visible lasers late last year, and announced our Laser TV contract with Asia Optical in November of 2007. Less than eight months later we have delivered our lasers to spec and Asia Optical has already demonstrated a very large and impressive first image; I believe this achievement is a testament to AOCI's engineering team, our next-generation technology, and our combined synergies which I am confident will enable a highly competitive family of laser televisions." Utilizing QPC's high power, compact, and cost effective semiconductor laser technology, laser displays offer a dramatically improved viewing experience compared to other older and/or more expensive technologies available today such as those based on lamps, plasma, LCDs, and conventional cathode ray tubes. Consumers may enjoy substantially more vibrant, life-like colors with the high resolution and wide viewing angles from lightweight, low cost, slim-profile devices. "QPC's ultra high quality laser beam technology is unique, is protected by 16 patents, trade secrets and proprietary processes; in addition to televisions, a variety of projection displays are in position to profit from our superior laser light sources including portable projectors for cell phones and laptops, home and commercial theatre, video gaming as well as 3 Dimensional applications for which we announced a $3.5 Million contract earlier this month," Ungar concluded. QPC completed the required development milestones on July 7, 2008 (see announcement) and originally announced the $12 Million contract in November 2007 (see announcement). QPC demonstrated its first green laser based on frequency doubling of its proprietary BrightLase(R) single-mode laser technology. (See announcement.)

New chief Sanjay Jha to ring changes at Motorola unit

50million units. Shares in the group have fallen by more than 60per cent since October 2006, when investors began to becomedisillusioned with the company's falling sales. Its global marketshare has fallen to 9.5 per cent from 24 per cent two years ago, taking it from second to third place behind Nokia and Samsung.

In March Motorola agreed to float the handset unit after pressurefrom Carl Icahn, the billionaire activist shareholder, who arguedthat the failing division should be restructured.

Mr Icahn, who is the group's second-biggest shareholder with a 6.3per cent stake, had hoped to appoint Keith Meister, who runs MrIcahn's $8 billion (£4.08 billion) investment fund, as headof the handset unit.

Motorola has been searching for a chief executive of the unit sinceMarch. Greg Brown, who became chief executive of the group lastNovember, stepped in to lead the division in the interim.

Dr Jha, 45, who was born in India, lived in Britain for 15 yearsbefore moving to the United States in 1994 to work for Qualcomm, the wireless technology developer. He was was made chief operatingofficerby Qualcomm in late 2006. He has also been made co-chiefexecutive of Motorola group alongside Mr Brown, who will continueto run its home entertainment and public safety units.

Simona Jankowski and Thomas Lee, analysts for Goldman Sachs, calledhis appointment “a big win” for Motorola and a loss forQualcomm.

Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight, said: “Sanjay Jhais very well connected in the mobile industry and knows thechallenges facing him. Taking on that role is a hugely dauntingtask, but I think he has the personality to pull the companyforward.”

Others fear that resuscitating the unit may be too great achallenge. Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devicesat Gartner, said: “He's very knowledgable and veryno-nonsense, but I don't know if he has enough vision to turnthings around in terms of design and brand.”

Last week Motorola surprised Wall Street by reporting a smallsecond-quarter profit, led by the success of its home entertainmentand public safety units. Although sales of its mobile phones grewto 28.1 million in the second quarter, up from 27 million in thefirst, the group predicted slowing sales in the third quarter.Qualcomm said that Len Lauer, its executive vice-president, wouldreplace Dr Jha.

Shares in Motorola rose $1.01, or more than 11 per cent, to closeat $9.82 in New York. Qualcomm’s shares fell $2.60, nearly 5per cent, to end the day at $52.87.

Linux to Outsell Windows in Mobile Internet Device Market

Mobile Linux will outsell Microsoft Windows Mobile and other rivalOS makers in the mobile Internet device market by 2013, says ABIResearch. Moblin, LiMo and Maemo will be the leading Linux mobileproviders.

Linux will be the top-selling operating system in the mobileInternet device market, outselling Microsoft Windows Mobile andother rivals by 2013, said ABI Research.

The MID market is relatively small nowonly 305,000 MID units areexpected to be shipped in 2008but it is expected to grow to 39.6million units in 2012.

Linux will dominate that growth, said Stuart Carlaw, AlliedBusiness Intelligence's research director.

The MID market presents a rare green field for Linux, said thereport from ABI, "Bringing License-Free Operating Systems toSmartphones and Middle-Tier Devices." In MIDs, all mobile OSesare starting out about equal, "without the baggage of previoushistories such as existed in the smart-phone market." Linuxwill lead the pack, said the research group, due in large part to"its ability to provide a converged platform that can spanmultiple device segments."

New LiMo phones challenge Android. Click here to read more.

"The flexibility, customization and very positive costcomparison to Windows Mobile look set to ensure that Linux takesthe leading role in this market," Carlaw said.

Mobile Linux providers LiMo, Maemo and Moblin are laying thegroundwork now to lead the pack when the market gets going, ABIsaid.

LiMo's main focus is on phones, and

the group announced seven new LiMo-compliant handsets Aug. 4.

But supporting MIDs means LiMo greatly increases the targethardware options available to software developers targeting LiMomobile phones.

Maemo and Moblin are sponsored by Nokia and Intel, respectively. Both platforms are currently aimed closely at their target markets:Nokia Internet Tablets for Maemo, and Intel Atom-based MIDs forMoblin. Intel and Moblin are expected to ship Moblin 2.0 in August.

SinglePoint Serves Ads to Mobile Phones

 -By Shahnaz Mahmud

 NEW YORK

Interactive TV firm SinglePoint has launched what it believes tobe the first mobile ad insertion platform. Dubbed SingleBrand, theoffering is designed to retrieve and serve ads for interactiveshows on networks such as Bravo, NBC, MTV, Fox and the CW.

"This is the first time that anybody has provided a vehicle forother ad networks to get exposure to messaging traffic availablefor ad insertion. The idea of what we are trying to do here isexpose all of the inventory that is eligible from our clients andmake that available to a variety of other ad networks," said RichBegert, president and CEO of SinglePoint.

One mobile ad net that's signed up is RingLeader Digital.Discussions are underway with several others, Begert said.

When viewers respond to calls to action -- for example, voting fortheir favorite performer via their mobile phones - they're served aconfirmation reply that also includes an ad message. Thus,SinglePoint's media and entertainment partners can generate revenueby providing advertisers access to viewers.

Advertisers can use click-to-call, click-to-link and click-to-SMSon the platform.

Begert noted that SingleBrand allows advertisers to more carefullytarget prospects, while consumers receive more relevant messages"so they are not just being bombarded with aimless types ofadvertising."

U.S. mobile advertising revenue is expected to exceed $2 billion by2012, said Vikrant Gandhi, senior analyst at Frost & Sullivan."2008 is an exciting turning point for the industry, where mobileadvertising is actually becoming a line item for leading agenciesand brands. A greater participation of advertisers in the mobileopportunity is expected to be the prime growth driver."

New LiMo Phones Up the Mobile Linux Ante for Android

Of the new phones, the lone model available now in the UnitedStates is the

Motozine ZN5

. Essentially an uber camera/phone, this device uses imagingtechnology from Kodak and has 4 gigabytes of memory for storingphotos. Users slide the lens cover to transform the camera back toa phone.

  The new

FOMA phones

from NEC and Panasonic are currently only available in Japan, where they run on NTT Docomo's 3G network. These gadgets leverageinternational roaming capabilities, GPS (Global PositioningSystem), mobile TV and full-featured video playback, mobile paymentand advanced mail features.

LiMo Foundation Executive Director Morgan Gillis said in astatement that smart phones are a sign of things to come.Presumably, he means particularly in the United States. Japanremains the dominant mobile Internet phone consuming country in theworld while Internet-based phone adoption in the United Statesgreatly lags behind countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific.

LiMo hopes its open source-based phones will follow the iPhone'spath of success. Google wishes similar success for its Androidmobile OS, though phones based on the complete mobile stack aren'tslated to see daylight until the end of the year--assuming Google'sprogrammers and phone manufacturer partners can make theirdeadlines.

There has been speculation that Google Android advocates arestruggling with this, but Google has

denied the assertion

  However, the company also

ticked off programmers

by first offering a new SDK to only 50 leading Android developers,so there are signs the company isn't always on the same page as thepeople building applications for it. This can't be good forplatform development.

I hope Google's Android development team makes its deadline laterthis year. If not, the rabble will cry for the dissolution of theOpen Handset Alliance, or at least argue for it to be merged withthe new Symbian Foundation or LiMo.

What will happen to Android then? The work of Google Android leadAndy Rubin and his team may go for naught.

Concerns over Android aside, ABI Research analyst Stuart Carlawsaid the mobile Internet device market is a ripe green field"in which all mobile operating systems start on the same equalfooting, without the baggage of previous histories such as existedin the smart-phone market."

For that reason, Carlaw said mobile Linux-based systems could notchunit volumes of 50 million units per year in 2013. He added:

Sunbed HEALTH inspectors have started an investigation after a 15-year-oldgirl was burnt so badly on a tanning salon bed that she neededhospital treatment. Schoolgirl Katie Turner was rushed to casualty suffering fromsevere sunburn, sickness, and headaches after spending more than 20minutes under the lamps. Health campaigners have called for a change in the law to ban theuse of tanning beds by children - a call supported by Katie'smother, Elizabeth Turner. She said: "My daughter was burnt red raw - I have never seen her insuch a state. She was in absolute agony and could hardly stand. Sheshould never have been allowed to use a sunbed for so long." Government guidelines state that UV lamps should not be used byunder-16s - but it is not a legal requirement. Nina Gould, of the British Association of Dermatologists, told TheNorthern Echo that laws should be introduced to ban children fromusing sunbeds. "This law has already been passed in Scotland, which is fantastic, but we want the rest of the UK to follow," she said. "Being burnt this badly increases your chances of getting melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer." More than 100 deaths from skin cancer every year in the UK arethought to be linked to the use of sunbeds. Recent research by Which? magazine found three per cent of eight to 15-year-olds, 170,000young people, have used a sunbed despite accepted advice about thehealth dangers. Ministers are considering draft guidelines drawn up by the Healthand Safety Executive that would result in tougher regulation of thesunbed industry. As well as banning children, salons would have to be staffed at alltimes and unsupervised, coin operated sunbeds would be banned. The Darlington teenager went to the salon with a schoolfriend andlay on the bed for 12 minutes. She returned later that afternoonthinking the session had not worked and was allowed back on foranother nine minutes. By the end of the day she needed to be treated with antihistaminesand painkillers at Darlington Memorial Hospital's accident andemergency unit. Ms Turner, 34, of Hutton Road, Darlington, said: "Katie has askedme before if she could go on a sunbed, but I have always said no.She's far too young and she has lilywhite skin. "But kids being kids, she went after school with her friends. Thepeople at the salon didn't ask her age or talk her through what shewas meant to do. "After the first 12 minutes she thought that it hadn't worked soshe went back and asked for another nine minutes. She didn't wear any goggles so she was staring into the bulbs withher eyes open the whole time." Later that evening, Ms Turner heard cries coming minutes, but shelooked like she had been lying in the sun for two days." Philip Glancey, who runs the tanning parlour in Nightingale Avenue,Darlington, said Katie told him she had used the beds before, andwas served by another member of staff when she came back the secondtime. "She did it all underhand," said Mr Glancey, who runs his business separately from the Head toToe hair salon, which operates from the same premises. "I advise people who have not been before to go on for no more thansix minutes. "I asked if she had been on a sunbed before and she said yes. Ialso told her the goggles were there, but she did not want to usethem. "She came back in the afternoon when I was out and my wife servedher. She had no idea the girl had already been in. "I have told the mother to come round to see me to speak to me. "I have done everything by the book. I have put notices up to tellpeople what they can and can't do. "When I first opened, I was concerned about kids from the nearbyschool coming in. I asked the council if there was an age limit but there is no agelimit. I don't let people in who are ten, 11 or 12 - but I coulddo. "She got herself burnt and is trying to make it look as if it'smy fault." A spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council said officers would beinterviewing the Turner family and the salon owners. "The council's environmental health team is continuing to collectinformation about a possible offence," she said. "Tanning salons should have proper systems in place to ensurecustomers do not exceed recommended usage."

'Orange' pupils prompt crackdown on craze for fake tan

Sunbed Generations of girls have fought their parents and teachers overthe length of their skirts but the growing popularity ofperma-tanned celebrities has thrown up a new battleground: howbrown or orange their skin should be. Inspired bybronzed role models such as Girls Aloud, teenagers are slapping onmore fake tan than ever before. So serious is the situation atBaines High School in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, that its actingheadteacher has written to parents, advising them to control thetanning habits of their children. "We ask for your support in ensuring that girls do not come toschool looking varying shades of orange," Carol Robinson wrote. The edict falls short of an outright ban and Ms Robinsonacknowledged that it was healthier to slap on a tanning productthan to sunbathe or use a sunbed and risk skin cancer. Dr John Kellett, a Blackpool-based consultant dermatologist, alsosaid it was safer for pupils to use fake tan. "If the alternativeis for young girls to go on the sunbed, then it is preferable," headded. There was support for the new guidelines among pupils. AlisonTaylor, a 17-year-old sixth former, said: "I think it looks a lotnicer to be natural than bright orange." Interesting? Click here to explore further

MP Voices Support for Safe Sunbed Campaign

Sunbed Mr Milburn has tabled two questions, which will be answered by hissuccessor as Health Secretary, Alan Johnson, during a forthcomingsession of parliamentary questions. He is to ask Mr Johnson for a change in the law, as well as abreakdown of NHS statistics showing the number of children andadultswho have been admitted to hospitals with burns sustained onsunbeds. Darlington teenager Miss Turner was allowed to use the beds at atown tanning salon for 12 minutes, followed by a further nine-minute session later the same day. Her burns were so serious that she needed to be treated withpainkillers and antihistamines at the accident and emergencydepartment of Darlington Memorial Hospital. The national Sunbed Association issues a code of practice tomembers not to allow under-16s into their salons under anycircumstances, but there is no legal requirement for businessowners to follow the advice. Cancer charities and the British Association for Dermatologistshave called for England and Wales to introduce age restrictions inline with the ban recently introduced in Scotland. Dr Ravi Suchak, dermatologist at Barts and the London NHS Trust, said: ?Our findings indicate that a significant number ofschoolchildren use artificial tanning devices. Moreover, a significant proportion of them are fair skinned andhave higher than average exposure to outdoor sunshine. ?Tougher licensing and regulation of tanning salons is overdue. ? (c) 2008 Northern Echo. Call to justify sunbed policy amid cancer fears

Call to justify sunbed policy amid cancer fearsSunbed CITY leisure bosses are being asked to defend a policy of offeringsunbed sessions at council-owned leisure centres amid cancer fears. Ten leisure centres currently offer the tanning machines to thepublic, despite recent evidence that usage can increase the risk ofdeveloping skin cancer by 75 per cent. Now councillors on Birmingham’s public protection committeeare calling on the city’s leisure department to justifyoffering sunbed tanning to citizens. Committee member Coun Mick Wilkes (Lib Dem, Hall Green) said:“I don’t know what we are doing with any of thesethings in our leisure centres at all. “We should ask them to justify why, apart from financialreasons, we have got any sunbeds.” He was told by officers that at least in council facilitiespeople’s usage is properly monitored, they are fully informedof health and safety concerns and under 18s are prevented fromusing them, unlike in some private tanning salons. The debate came as the committee considered new safety guidelinesfor Birmingham’s 230 licensed tanning salons. The leisure department has now agreed to a sunbed policy review inthe light of the committee’s concern. A spokesman said: “Birmingham City Council is committed toensuring the health and safety of all its leisure centre users. Wefollow strict guidelines from the Health and Safety Executive andThe Sunbed Association on sunbed use. “Every first-time sunbed user is given an information leafletabout safe tanning to read and sign and is then shown how to usethe sunbed correctly. “We strongly advise users do not exceed more than 20 sessionsper year.” He said they also insisted that users do not have more than onesession in any 24 hours – in line with HSE recommendations.

Jenny's sunbed warning

Jenny's sunbed warningSunbed  A YOUNG mum who developed skin cancer after using sun beds ishelping promote a safe-tanning message.  Jenny Murray, 28, from Hyde, launched a street theatre performancecalled `Sunbed Trauma' in Piccadilly Gardens which featured a mocknews crew reporting on the dangers of skin cancer.  She used sun beds two or three times a week as a teenager for aboutsix months before developing a rash on her chest.  Two years later she was diagnosed with skin cancer and had to havelaser treatment and then surgery.  Jenny, who has a six-month-old son Jack, has been given the allclear.  She says her friends and family are always telling people about herexperience and warning them about the dangers of sunbeds and nowshe is acting as an ambassador for the Cancer Research UK project.  The charity has also organised performances in Newcastle andLeicester - because of the number of sunbed salons in the citiesand their popularity among young people.  Jenny said: "It was shocking finding out I had cancer, reallyshocking not just for me but all my family and friends too, butwe've used my experiences to warn other people and I've seen peoplechange their behaviour so I'm fully behind anything which gets outthe message about sun beds.  Risk  "A tan isn't worth the risk, its just not that important. If youare really worried about being pale use fake tan instead - they'rereally good and really cheap now.  "My parents were really careful about me when I was little so Iknew my cancer was down to sun beds. I am really careful with Jack,we use factor 50 and sun hats."  Sunbed Trauma features a TV news crew attending a `crime scene' toreport on the shocking news that a young person is willinglydamaging their skin and increasing their risk of cancer for thesake of a tan.  Aimed at teenagers, the dialogue addressed many of the argumentsyoung people use to justify the need to have a tan, forming a keypart of Cancer Research UK's 2008 SunSmart campaign.  Malignant melanoma, which is the most dangerous type of skincancer, is now the most common cancer in young adults aged 15 to 34and can be fatal.  This year's SunSmart campaign is targeting younger people inparticular as research shows that people who start using sunbedsunder the age of 35 increase their risk of skin cancer by around 75per cent.  In the north west, around 950 people are diagnosed with malignantmelanoma each year. Across Britain, there are almost 9,000 cases ofthe disease every year and more than 1800 people die from it everyyear.  Caroline Cerny from SunSmart said: "A lot of people know thatburning in the sun is a bad idea, but surprisingly few realise thatthe UV rays in sunbeds can prove just as dangerous. Young skin isparticularly susceptible to damage and we know from research thatusing sunbeds significantly increases the risk of skin cancer aswell as causing premature ageing.  "Over exposure to artificial UV in sunbeds can be just as dangerousas staying out too long in sun. It is a common misconception thatsunbeds have had `harmful rays removed' or that sunbeds are `a safeway to tan.' The intensity of some UV rays from some sunbeds can be10-15 times higher than that of the midday sun.  "Sunbeds offer no health benefits but significantly increase skincancer risk. In fact, using a sunbed once a month or more canincrease a person's risk of skin cancer by more than half."Related Audio ClipsJenny Murray talks about skin cancer.

Street Theatre Warns of the Danger of Sunbed Tans

Sunbed The mother-of-two, who started using sunbeds when she was 18, said:"All my friends used sunbeds so I did too. It was the fashion. Weall wanted nice tanned legs so we could wear short dresses on ournights out in Newcastle." But since being diagnosed with malignant melanoma, Louise, whoteaches history at The Hermitage School in Chester-le-Street, feelsthat people should be aware of the risks of using sunbeds. She said: "The irony is that wanting tanned legs when I was youngermeans that now I can't show my legs at all because they are sobadly scarred from treatment for skin cancer. "It annoys, upsets and frightens me when I see young girls talkingabout using sunbeds to look tanned. It's so dangerous." The street theatre performance, part of Cancer Research UK'sSunSmart campaign, will feature a mock 'TV news crew' attending a'crime scene' to report on the shocking news that a young person iswillingly damaging their skin and increasing their risk of skincancer by using a sunbed for the sake of a tan. Performances will take place in the Monument area until 4.30pm.After each performance, actors and Cancer Research UK staff willhand out 'Sunbed Trauma' postcards addressing tanning myths anddirecting young people to a new MySpace page (www.myspace.com/besunsmart) for more information. (c) 2008 The Journal - Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Political Notebook: Old divisions re-emerge in Pittsfield ca...

NOTEBOOK Another echo of a past congressional campaign has popped up in thePittsfield Township Democratic primary, where former U.S. Rep. LynnRivers of Ann Arbor has contributed $500 to Pittsfield Promise. That's the political action committee supporting supervisorcandidate Mandy Grewal and a slate trying to oust a group ofincumbents led by Supervisor James Walter.

Earlier this summer, U.S. Rep. John Dingell endorsed Walter and hisgroup, and his campaign committee donated $1,000 to their cause.

Dingell defeated Rivers in the Democratic primary in 2002 after aRepublican-designed redistricting forced Dingell and Rivers to runfor the same seat. During that campaign, Walter and members of hisgroup endorsed Dingell.

Rivers' donation was reported in a late contribution report filedTuesday, July 29. PACs have 48 hours to file a late contributionreport for donations over $200 that come in less than 15 daysbefore an election.

Disclosure amends

Pittsfield Promise also will be amending its pre-election campaignfinance report.

Attorney Michael McCormick, who is treasurer for the group, said hedid not read far enough in the rules for filing the reports when helisted Nature's Garden Center L.L.C. as the donor of $2,500.

According to the rules, a limited liability company may notcontribute more than $500 without registering as a campaigncommittee.

The report will be amended to reflect the name of the individual atNature's Garden Center donating the $2,500, McCormick said.

Opponents break bread

Stewart Nelson has been at odds with Ann Arbor's City Council overissues including the future of the Huron Hills Golf Course and thenew police-court building.

But the 2nd Ward City Council candidate decided it would nice tohave a meal with the mayor. And so, at a recent Democratic partyfundraiser, Nelson wrote a check for $125 for the privilege ofhaving breakfast with Mayor John Hieftje.

"It was very cordial," said Nelson of the 90-minute meal at theNorthside Grill.

Frequent fliers

The last-minute, pre-primary jockeying has included someinteresting advertising: A mailer sent to Scio Township residentstelling them not to be "fooled" by a flier about Republicansrunning as Democrats, for example.

A newspaper ad placed on behalf of Ypsilanti Township supervisorcandidate Brenda Stumbo and her slate concerned allegations aboutan earlier campaign mailer.

The ad stated that Norman and Sandra Andresen filed complaintsagainst Stumbo - the current township clerk, alleging Stumbo maileda political literature labeled "sample ballot" from the clerk'soffice to all absentee voters promoting her team.

Wrong, says Andresen.

Although she did write a formal letter of complaint it did not saythat Stumbo mailed the literature from the clerk's office.

Instead, she and her husband questioned the use of sample ballotsmarked with the names of Stumbo's slate. The campaign literaturewas sent to absentee voters.

The Andresens are asking the state to clarify whether thealteration violates the law.

We've got the letter. Andresen's right.

MLS - Davis: Five things to note from MLS Week 18

The Galaxy fell to Dallas 4-0 on Sunday, leaving the ballyhooedmidfielder and his manager, Ruud Gullit, questioning the team'sapproach and collective ability to fight through adversecircumstance. The margin could have been far worse; FC Dallas hit the crossbarthree times in claiming a first MLS victory for new managerSchellas Hyndman. The Galaxy put just two shots on goal (comparedto 11 for Dallas) and didn't force a corner kick until the 70thminute.It was a far cry from L.A.'s last stroll through Frisco, a 5-1Galaxy win back in May. The only thing that went wrong that nightwas Adrian Serioux's awful challenge on Beckham, which earned theFCD defender a two-game suspension.Sunday, neither team could relish such difficult circumstances: 100degrees at kickoff with no breeze. Half the game played out in theblazing sun, before evening shade could mercifully offer somerespite.affected the Galaxy worse than FC Dallas, and Beckham was thefirst to say so."We didn't deserve to win," he said. "Our attitude wasn't good tostart the game. So, nothing really positive to take from thisgame."The Galaxy were behind early as Kenny Cooper scored the first ofhis pair in the 15th minute. In the 17th he stripped debutingGalaxy defender Eduardo Dominguez, worked a quick exchange withDominic Oduro and then finished neatly into the corner."Chasing the game is always tough, especially in this heat,"Beckham said. "We didn't start the game well, even before theyscored the goal. We were losing the ball, wasn't passing the ballaround the field. We just didn't play well."Beckham acknowledged that fatigue was a factor, although not anoverriding one. Along with Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle, heparticipated in Thursday's All-Star game in Toronto. Beckham wentall 90 minutes on the artificial surface. He flew back to LosAngeles on Friday, trained with the team Saturday and then hoppedright back on a flight across two time zones Saturday evening.Dealing with less-than-ideal circumstances is a way of life in MLS,and Beckham said he and the team simply need to cope better."There must be some lesson learned. At the moment, we're trying tofind what it is. Because I think the big thing was our attitudemaybe, because we just didn't start well."Other things that stood out about the 18th round of MLS matches:

Not Expected Soon

$100 Notebook Those waiting for a $100 laptop shouldn't hold their breath, according to a report released on Monday by research firm Gartner. The $100 notebook computer will remain a dream for at least three years, and fixating onhitting the $100 price point could distract computer makers from focusing on issues facing the mini-notebook marketthat they actually can resolve in the meantime, Gartner said."The economic benefits of IT literacy in emerging markets arecurrently driving the push for the $100 PC but there are many openquestions that remain," said Annette Jump, research director atGartner, Stamford, Conn., in a statement."These include determining the relevant hardware specifications, power availability, availability and cost of Internet connection,as well as providing adequate finance and payment options foremerging markets where funds may well be extremely limited."While initially targeted towards the education market, the low-costmini-notebooks have stayed well above $100 and are likely to remainso for at least the next two to three years, Gartner said. Pricescould come down by 10 to 15 percent in that time, Jump said, butmanufacturing, packaging and software costs will likely stay steady.>According to the report, education users in emerging markets ikeAfrica and South America are using mini-notebooks, but planning, technical support, training and content development are stillconcerns.n the business market, mini-notebooks would be better positionedas a "window into the Internet" rather than as a computing device,Gartner said. Mini-notebooks are expected to grow in popularity, across geographies and markets."We expect to see increased product innovation in the PC marketduring the next few years," Jump said.

Proof relationships can last, what they say

A relationship can be tough, but if it's meant to be, it willindeed be worth it.

I was a senior in high school when this tall boy with beautifulblue eyes sat down in the empty seat in front of me in governmentclass to run the projector. By the end of the first film on theSupreme Court, we were trying on each other's class rings. That wasOct. 30.

Our first date was Nov. 4. He asked me to "go steady" (yes, it waslong ago) Nov. 11 and asked me to marry him Dec. 15. We wanted towait until we graduated from college before we got married, so wekept our "engagement" a secret between us for five years.

But it wasn't all roses and sunbeams. My father was IrishProtestant (the man wore orange on St. Patrick's Day) and Larry'sfamily was Polish Catholic. My parents didn't want me anywhere neara Catholic, and his parents thought he should be with a nice Polishgirl.

They discovered that a little Irish mixes well with Polish, and, most amazing, years after we were married (in a Catholic church),my father insisted to a friend that he had picked Larry out for me.

When we were first together and I became upset that Larry wastaking me for granted — assuming we would go out on certainnights without asking, for example — my mother began urgingme to break up with him, and it worked.

But what it also did was start a six-month courtship by him to winme back, and that worked, too.

Then when he was drafted into the

Blackwater Drops Games For Soldiers

Blackwater Worldwide might be notorious for some questionablebehavior in our current theaters of operation, but the militarycontractor that draws its ranks from the U.S. Military has a softerside, according to a report on Game Politics.

According to the report (which comes from an AP story), Blackwateris packaging a special gift for troops on the ground inAfghanistan. These special packages include an Xbox 360, modem, aTV projector and a copy of

Guitar Hero

. These packages are being prepared for air drops out of Blackwatercargo planes and to the troops on the ground.

Politicos will say that this is just a marketing campaign to makethe company look better, and they probably wouldn’t be wrongin that characterization - but at least the net gains of it mostlygo to the troops on the ground..
