New chief Sanjay Jha to ring changes at Motorola unit
50million units. Shares in the group have fallen by more than 60per cent since October 2006, when investors began to becomedisillusioned with the company's falling sales. Its global marketshare has fallen to 9.5 per cent from 24 per cent two years ago, taking it from second to third place behind Nokia and Samsung.
In March Motorola agreed to float the handset unit after pressurefrom Carl Icahn, the billionaire activist shareholder, who arguedthat the failing division should be restructured.
Mr Icahn, who is the group's second-biggest shareholder with a 6.3per cent stake, had hoped to appoint Keith Meister, who runs MrIcahn's $8 billion (£4.08 billion) investment fund, as headof the handset unit.
Motorola has been searching for a chief executive of the unit sinceMarch. Greg Brown, who became chief executive of the group lastNovember, stepped in to lead the division in the interim.
Dr Jha, 45, who was born in India, lived in Britain for 15 yearsbefore moving to the United States in 1994 to work for Qualcomm, the wireless technology developer. He was was made chief operatingofficerby Qualcomm in late 2006. He has also been made co-chiefexecutive of Motorola group alongside Mr Brown, who will continueto run its home entertainment and public safety units.
Simona Jankowski and Thomas Lee, analysts for Goldman Sachs, calledhis appointment “a big win” for Motorola and a loss forQualcomm.
Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight, said: “Sanjay Jhais very well connected in the mobile industry and knows thechallenges facing him. Taking on that role is a hugely dauntingtask, but I think he has the personality to pull the companyforward.”
Others fear that resuscitating the unit may be too great achallenge. Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devicesat Gartner, said: “He's very knowledgable and veryno-nonsense, but I don't know if he has enough vision to turnthings around in terms of design and brand.”
Last week Motorola surprised Wall Street by reporting a smallsecond-quarter profit, led by the success of its home entertainmentand public safety units. Although sales of its mobile phones grewto 28.1 million in the second quarter, up from 27 million in thefirst, the group predicted slowing sales in the third quarter.Qualcomm said that Len Lauer, its executive vice-president, wouldreplace Dr Jha.
Shares in Motorola rose $1.01, or more than 11 per cent, to closeat $9.82 in New York. Qualcomm’s shares fell $2.60, nearly 5per cent, to end the day at $52.87.
Linux to Outsell Windows in Mobile Internet Device Market
Mobile Linux will outsell Microsoft Windows Mobile and other rivalOS makers in the mobile Internet device market by 2013, says ABIResearch. Moblin, LiMo and Maemo will be the leading Linux mobileproviders.
Linux will be the top-selling operating system in the mobileInternet device market, outselling Microsoft Windows Mobile andother rivals by 2013, said ABI Research.
The MID market is relatively small nowonly 305,000 MID units areexpected to be shipped in 2008but it is expected to grow to 39.6million units in 2012.
Linux will dominate that growth, said Stuart Carlaw, AlliedBusiness Intelligence's research director.
The MID market presents a rare green field for Linux, said thereport from ABI, "Bringing License-Free Operating Systems toSmartphones and Middle-Tier Devices." In MIDs, all mobile OSesare starting out about equal, "without the baggage of previoushistories such as existed in the smart-phone market." Linuxwill lead the pack, said the research group, due in large part to"its ability to provide a converged platform that can spanmultiple device segments."

"The flexibility, customization and very positive costcomparison to Windows Mobile look set to ensure that Linux takesthe leading role in this market," Carlaw said.
Mobile Linux providers LiMo, Maemo and Moblin are laying thegroundwork now to lead the pack when the market gets going, ABIsaid.
LiMo's main focus is on phones, and
the group announced seven new LiMo-compliant handsets Aug. 4.
But supporting MIDs means LiMo greatly increases the targethardware options available to software developers targeting LiMomobile phones.
Maemo and Moblin are sponsored by Nokia and Intel, respectively. Both platforms are currently aimed closely at their target markets:Nokia Internet Tablets for Maemo, and Intel Atom-based MIDs forMoblin. Intel and Moblin are expected to ship Moblin 2.0 in August.

SinglePoint Serves Ads to Mobile Phones
-By Shahnaz Mahmud
NEW YORK
Interactive TV firm SinglePoint has launched what it believes tobe the first mobile ad insertion platform. Dubbed SingleBrand, theoffering is designed to retrieve and serve ads for interactiveshows on networks such as Bravo, NBC, MTV, Fox and the CW.
"This is the first time that anybody has provided a vehicle forother ad networks to get exposure to messaging traffic availablefor ad insertion. The idea of what we are trying to do here isexpose all of the inventory that is eligible from our clients andmake that available to a variety of other ad networks," said RichBegert, president and CEO of SinglePoint.
One mobile ad net that's signed up is RingLeader Digital.Discussions are underway with several others, Begert said.
When viewers respond to calls to action -- for example, voting fortheir favorite performer via their mobile phones - they're served aconfirmation reply that also includes an ad message. Thus,SinglePoint's media and entertainment partners can generate revenueby providing advertisers access to viewers.
Advertisers can use click-to-call, click-to-link and click-to-SMSon the platform.
Begert noted that SingleBrand allows advertisers to more carefullytarget prospects, while consumers receive more relevant messages"so they are not just being bombarded with aimless types ofadvertising."
U.S. mobile advertising revenue is expected to exceed $2 billion by2012, said Vikrant Gandhi, senior analyst at Frost & Sullivan."2008 is an exciting turning point for the industry, where mobileadvertising is actually becoming a line item for leading agenciesand brands. A greater participation of advertisers in the mobileopportunity is expected to be the prime growth driver."
New LiMo Phones Up the Mobile Linux Ante for Android
Of the new phones, the lone model available now in the UnitedStates is the
Motozine ZN5
. Essentially an uber camera/phone, this device uses imagingtechnology from Kodak and has 4 gigabytes of memory for storingphotos. Users slide the lens cover to transform the camera back toa phone.
The new
FOMA phones
from NEC and Panasonic are currently only available in Japan, where they run on NTT Docomo's 3G network. These gadgets leverageinternational roaming capabilities, GPS (Global PositioningSystem), mobile TV and full-featured video playback, mobile paymentand advanced mail features.
LiMo Foundation Executive Director Morgan Gillis said in astatement that smart phones are a sign of things to come.Presumably, he means particularly in the United States. Japanremains the dominant mobile Internet phone consuming country in theworld while Internet-based phone adoption in the United Statesgreatly lags behind countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific.
LiMo hopes its open source-based phones will follow the iPhone'spath of success. Google wishes similar success for its Androidmobile OS, though phones based on the complete mobile stack aren'tslated to see daylight until the end of the year--assuming Google'sprogrammers and phone manufacturer partners can make theirdeadlines.
There has been speculation that Google Android advocates arestruggling with this, but Google has
denied the assertion
However, the company also
ticked off programmers
by first offering a new SDK to only 50 leading Android developers,so there are signs the company isn't always on the same page as thepeople building applications for it. This can't be good forplatform development.
I hope Google's Android development team makes its deadline laterthis year. If not, the rabble will cry for the dissolution of theOpen Handset Alliance, or at least argue for it to be merged withthe new Symbian Foundation or LiMo.
What will happen to Android then? The work of Google Android leadAndy Rubin and his team may go for naught.
Concerns over Android aside, ABI Research analyst Stuart Carlawsaid the mobile Internet device market is a ripe green field"in which all mobile operating systems start on the same equalfooting, without the baggage of previous histories such as existedin the smart-phone market."
For that reason, Carlaw said mobile Linux-based systems could notchunit volumes of 50 million units per year in 2013. He added:

Political Notebook: Old divisions re-emerge in Pittsfield ca...
NOTEBOOK Another echo of a past congressional campaign has popped up in thePittsfield Township Democratic primary, where former U.S. Rep. LynnRivers of Ann Arbor has contributed $500 to Pittsfield Promise. That's the political action committee supporting supervisorcandidate Mandy Grewal and a slate trying to oust a group ofincumbents led by Supervisor James Walter.
Earlier this summer, U.S. Rep. John Dingell endorsed Walter and hisgroup, and his campaign committee donated $1,000 to their cause.
Dingell defeated Rivers in the Democratic primary in 2002 after aRepublican-designed redistricting forced Dingell and Rivers to runfor the same seat. During that campaign, Walter and members of hisgroup endorsed Dingell.
Rivers' donation was reported in a late contribution report filedTuesday, July 29. PACs have 48 hours to file a late contributionreport for donations over $200 that come in less than 15 daysbefore an election.
Disclosure amends
Pittsfield Promise also will be amending its pre-election campaignfinance report.
Attorney Michael McCormick, who is treasurer for the group, said hedid not read far enough in the rules for filing the reports when helisted Nature's Garden Center L.L.C. as the donor of $2,500.
According to the rules, a limited liability company may notcontribute more than $500 without registering as a campaigncommittee.
The report will be amended to reflect the name of the individual atNature's Garden Center donating the $2,500, McCormick said.
Opponents break bread
Stewart Nelson has been at odds with Ann Arbor's City Council overissues including the future of the Huron Hills Golf Course and thenew police-court building.
But the 2nd Ward City Council candidate decided it would nice tohave a meal with the mayor. And so, at a recent Democratic partyfundraiser, Nelson wrote a check for $125 for the privilege ofhaving breakfast with Mayor John Hieftje.
"It was very cordial," said Nelson of the 90-minute meal at theNorthside Grill.
Frequent fliers
The last-minute, pre-primary jockeying has included someinteresting advertising: A mailer sent to Scio Township residentstelling them not to be "fooled" by a flier about Republicansrunning as Democrats, for example.
A newspaper ad placed on behalf of Ypsilanti Township supervisorcandidate Brenda Stumbo and her slate concerned allegations aboutan earlier campaign mailer.
The ad stated that Norman and Sandra Andresen filed complaintsagainst Stumbo - the current township clerk, alleging Stumbo maileda political literature labeled "sample ballot" from the clerk'soffice to all absentee voters promoting her team.
Wrong, says Andresen.
Although she did write a formal letter of complaint it did not saythat Stumbo mailed the literature from the clerk's office.
Instead, she and her husband questioned the use of sample ballotsmarked with the names of Stumbo's slate. The campaign literaturewas sent to absentee voters.
The Andresens are asking the state to clarify whether thealteration violates the law.
We've got the letter. Andresen's right.

Proof relationships can last, what they say
A relationship can be tough, but if it's meant to be, it willindeed be worth it.
I was a senior in high school when this tall boy with beautifulblue eyes sat down in the empty seat in front of me in governmentclass to run the projector. By the end of the first film on theSupreme Court, we were trying on each other's class rings. That wasOct. 30.
Our first date was Nov. 4. He asked me to "go steady" (yes, it waslong ago) Nov. 11 and asked me to marry him Dec. 15. We wanted towait until we graduated from college before we got married, so wekept our "engagement" a secret between us for five years.
But it wasn't all roses and sunbeams. My father was IrishProtestant (the man wore orange on St. Patrick's Day) and Larry'sfamily was Polish Catholic. My parents didn't want me anywhere neara Catholic, and his parents thought he should be with a nice Polishgirl.

Politicos will say that this is just a marketing campaign to makethe company look better, and they probably wouldn’t be wrongin that characterization - but at least the net gains of it mostlygo to the troops on the ground..
